“Local model inference gets interesting when you need control over the runtime. llama.cpp is a serious option if you are willing to match the model, build and hardware yourself.”
Why llama.cpp matters
llama.cpp provides C and C++ inference tooling with several hardware backends and support for compatible model files. I'd consider it for an embedded or local AI workflow where the runtime details matter. The control is useful, but it comes with decisions about model format, memory, quantization and backend configuration. A model fitting in memory does not tell you whether its quality or response time will suit the application. Start with a representative task on the intended hardware. The quickstart below builds the project with CMake; running inference also requires a suitable model.
Best for
- Developers building local or embedded inference workflows
- Engineers who want control over runtime and hardware choices
- People prepared to evaluate a model on their target machine
Consider alternatives if
- Users who want the simplest possible model launcher
- Teams expecting every local model to match a hosted service's quality
