About fzf
:cherry_blossom: A command-line fuzzy finder
Priy's verdict
“You often remember part of a command or filename, just not the exact string. fzf is a useful way to make that partial memory work in a terminal workflow.”
Why fzf matters
fzf is an interactive fuzzy finder that can filter a list of text, with shell integrations for common history and file-selection tasks. I'd start with history search or one recurring list instead of collecting a folder of elaborate shell functions. The advantage is how it composes with other commands: feed it candidates, inspect the matches and use the selection. It does not crawl or index every source for you, so the command producing the list still matters. Shell integration and preview configuration also take some setup. The Homebrew quickstart below applies where Homebrew is available; the README documents other platform installers.
Best for
- Terminal users searching command history or file lists
- Developers comfortable composing small shell workflows
- People who usually remember part of the item they want
Consider alternatives if
- People who rarely use a shell
- Users expecting a desktop search index without configuration
