“If your Python setup has become a collection of separate tools, uv is worth a small trial. Start with one project and check how its lockfile and commands fit your workflow.”
Why uv matters
uv brings Python versions, environments, project dependencies and command-line tools into one workflow. I like the idea of having fewer separate setup instructions to explain to a new contributor. The project lockfile is useful when the team needs a shared dependency definition. I would try it on a small repository before changing every build job: native dependencies and an existing packaging process still deserve testing. Treat speed comparisons as workload-specific, and check compatibility with the tools your project already relies on.
Best for
- Python developers who want one project-management workflow
- Teams that can test a packaging change in CI
- People managing several Python versions or command-line tools
Consider alternatives if
- Teams unable to change an established packaging process
- People expecting a new package manager to fix native build dependencies
