What is PostHog?
PostHog is a developer-oriented product platform with analytics, session replay, feature flags and related tools. Its analytics workflows include funnels and retention analysis, while replay can add context about what happened during a user's session.
Editorial assessment
An analytics dashboard earns its place when it changes what you build next. PostHog brings product events, session replay and feature flags close enough to investigate a problem together.
Editorial assessment of the documented product. This review does not include personal testing notes or benchmark results.
My starting point would be one product question: where do people abandon onboarding, or which step makes them retry? Define the events needed to answer that question before turning on every available chart. A smaller set of well-understood events is easier to trust.
Replay is appealing when a funnel tells you where the drop-off happens but leaves the reason unclear. I'd use it alongside the event data, then decide whether a change deserves a limited rollout with a feature flag. That is a practical sequence for a small product team.
There is setup work hiding behind the dashboard. Event names need consistency, identity needs thought and recording rules need a privacy review. I'd also watch usage separately for the products I enable. Having several tools together is useful, but you still need a reason to collect each piece of data.
Pros & cons
Pros
- Analytics, replay and flags can support the same product investigation.
- Funnels and retention views address concrete questions about user behavior.
- Feature targeting can help introduce a change to a limited audience.
- Developer-oriented tooling fits teams that want to own their instrumentation.
Cons
- Inconsistent events and identity handling can make the charts misleading.
- Session replay requires deliberate masking and capture rules.
- Several enabled products can make usage and costs harder to track.
